the drama of 4-H

as a kid i was in 4h....just a few years, but enough to learn how to bake and sew. i think i did a brief latch hook stint, but really - who does latch hook anymore? oh, there was the beginning of microwave foods and consumer clothing. i had some good memories of 4h....even if my dad never did buy me a pig!

..looking to keep mapboy entertained this summer we enrolled in mini 4h. he signed up for forestry and gardening. pretty simple and easy. we got our books and i took a brief look and thought to my self, "this is going to not be good!" the information was way too basic for my son's current skill level in these subjects and he is not going to enjoy this. then we head to the first meeting where the lady talked about stickers of dogs and food and mostly to the parents.

so one fine afternoon we sat down to work through the books. he was bored which turns to frustration which turns to anger which turned to horrible record sheets. i gave up and just let him grump through it.

now on to the projects....he decided to take some veggies for gardening. easy enough, but a last minute project. but how hard is it go pick a few veggies and put them on a plate? and a collage of items collected in a forest. simple enough...so mapboy headed out to the woods and field with grandma and brought home a bag of treasures. this morning we assembled our collage...and after a week of hiking, he was in much better spirits and did his record sheets over. what a relief...

here is his final project! i thought it turned out great!!! i put the hot glue on and he assembled it. i'm thankful that we had an amazingly peaceful time working on this....

but, i will say that mini 4h has been a bit of a bummer. i really thought they'd learn a little more. i am not sure we will venture into this next year. although princess has already picked out her project list and is gearing up for 4h fun. she wants to do foods - now that i can do! did i mention i won GRAND CHAMPION with my cookies in foods 1? sure did - we made chocolate crinkles and my mom and i spent a ton of time studying each cookie to see how they were crackled and dusted....she was such a good mom, but it paid off. now my sewing and modeling - can i just say saddle shoes were not a popular choice!!!!!!??? and i ripped more seams out than i care to remember - but atleast i learned to sew!

me, on politics

i despise politics. i never liked it, but i married a man fascinated with it. a man who wanted to be part of it all...and was, briefly. boy were our eyes opened... anyways...it seems like this election has several hot button topics. one of which is universal healthcare. my cousin started a blog called politics for mom and there have been several heated debates going on. i was reading several comments on healthcare. and frankly i was bothered! now, i don't know that a strict universal healthcare is the answer, but i do know that we have now doesn't work for the average person. here is our story.... hubby worked in a small business - 3 employees at the most that i can remember. we paid 1/2 our insurance..until it came to the point where our half each month was twice what we would pay if we were on our own. but for the owner it saved him money. so he agreed to cover ours in full. we were very grateful. i also know at times, that because of the healthcare cost, it was a struggle f...

the "calling"

okay - so it's been awhile since i've ranted...and it's time! it is beautiful outside and i'm sitting inside my makeshift office at the church. i am lucky enough to have a door that opens to the outside so it is wide open and i'm loving that. but as i'm working here today i feel the need to rant so enjoy.... being in my position i often have to ask people to help out. you know, volunteer to teach or work in the nursery or teach or hang out with the kids, you know - volunteer! i love all the responses i get. i am particularly fond of the "i don't like kids one" - it doesn't go over real well with me when they have 3 of their own. hmm??? but the one that really gets my goat is the "i don't feel called to that." argh...really!?!?!!?!? well, i didn't feel called to wipe my kids bottoms either, but it is a good thing i did it anyways. surprisingly, everyone feels called to the waterpark though! now, let me back up a ...
