the best friend...

so, we all have them..those people that become a friend for a lifetime. the one that can never be replaced. while i feel so blessed to have had several friends that have a forever spot in my heart like this, today happens to be one kindred spirit's birthday....so this is for you brooke!!!

us in 1995
like most of my lifetime, forever, best friends, i thought she was quite the snob fall quarter of my freshman year. she lived above me and would vacuum at 2 in the morning...drove me nuts! then she always had her hair done, make-up on, and wore suite coats to classes...can i just say weird!! she would also sit down front. i on the other hand - rolled out of bed and barely made it to class, sat near the back, and pretty much doodled my way through class. and vacumming? well, did we even have one of those?

but nevertheless, we were forced to associate when tennis rolled around. she was on the team too...geesh...honestly, by the end of our freshman year i'm pretty sure i totally annoyed her! but when we returned for our sophmore year, a friendship started to form - one that was most unexpected, but definitely the best!!

in so many ways we are total opposites, but i think that made things fun. as our friendship grew we were a perfect balance. she would tell me to study and i'd drag her to the mall for coffee and shopping. she'd wash her sheets every saturday - i'd wash twice a year! if i remembered to take them home at christmas! we were definitely good for each other!

we were travel partners - heading to some of the craziest places. well not really, just all the rainy places. we took off our junior year for florida we were in tampa along with a hurricane...so we headed to disney instead. then we flew to houston and spent an entire week watching brady bunch reruns while it rained outside! we flew to her home near st. louis several times and escaped to my hometown lots too!

but there was this one time, when her room mate suggested a quick trip to chicago for a chocolate trip pizza. you should know chicago was about 6 hours away from where we were having lunch on that sunday afternoon. brooke didn't want to go because she had a paper due on a book she hadn't read...but being the good sport she came along and we had a blast! and yes, she wrote the paper while we told her all about the book.

we cried when anne and gilbert didn't get together. we cried when they did. we failed HEL together and got 4.0's together. then there was the time we kidnapped her for her birthday. she had never had a surprise party so we pulled out all the stops and got her good!

but in with all the crazy fun times were those times of incredible conversation. times when the world seemed insane and reality was scarey. brooke liked to sleep (i guess she gave up midnight vacuuming!) so she would put a towel down in front of her door. i knew that meant she was sleeping and to leave her alone...but if i really needed to talk, she'd let me in anyways... i know many of those nights i drove her batty, but she'd listen anyways.

after college she headed to poland for a year and couldn't come home for my wedding. i was so bummed, but she called me the morning of the wedding. when she moved to california, she called to tell me she might, just may be falling in love. and then i was helping her plan a wedding! i've been blessed to visit her in LA and blessed that she usually makes the trek to a town near here once a year...

i pray that one day, we live a little closer. that we can get together more often, that we can have a weekend filled with anne, tea, coffee, and late night talks....

this was us just a few years ago...we've changed a little huh?? i miss you brooke...i'm thankful for your role in my life and believe that we will indeed be kindred spirits for years to come....

happy birthday friend....give your boys hugs from me and celebrate big time!! may God bless you with incredible passion for Him and life and all things this next year.....

me, on politics

i despise politics. i never liked it, but i married a man fascinated with it. a man who wanted to be part of it all...and was, briefly. boy were our eyes opened... anyways...it seems like this election has several hot button topics. one of which is universal healthcare. my cousin started a blog called politics for mom and there have been several heated debates going on. i was reading several comments on healthcare. and frankly i was bothered! now, i don't know that a strict universal healthcare is the answer, but i do know that we have now doesn't work for the average person. here is our story.... hubby worked in a small business - 3 employees at the most that i can remember. we paid 1/2 our insurance..until it came to the point where our half each month was twice what we would pay if we were on our own. but for the owner it saved him money. so he agreed to cover ours in full. we were very grateful. i also know at times, that because of the healthcare cost, it was a struggle f...

from the kitchen...

chicken bruschetta bake if you know me, you know my great distaste of tomatoes. i usually pick the tomato chunks out of my sgetti sauce. yes i just called it sgetti!! i eat all the chunks of my salsa, except the tomatoes. but over the past few years i've gotten a bit brave and will eat small pieces of tomatoes in fresh salsa and in this dish as well. i hadn't fixed this in probably over a year. but a few weeks ago i pulled out my recipe file to find some old favorites. i found this and realized i had everything in the pantry. that's a deal!!!!! i did have to switch out the diced tomatoes because my can was crushed instead. i prefer the diced but this worked just as well. the kids loved the chicken, but not so much the topping. this was great as leftovers, too. i ate it for lunch the following two days. 1 can. (12.5oz) diced tomatoes, undrained 1 pkg. stove top stuffing mix for chicken (i use aldi brand) 1/2 cup water 2 cloves garlic, minced 1.5 pounds skinless...

life with izzie b

so i'm out of town right now and this time with my friend izzie b (names have been changed to protect the people we know). we are actually at a conference that is rocking my world, but we are two crazy girls alone in a big city. anyways.....she is a weird person. she likes car rides and she likes to watch the sunrise while riding in the car so we started our trip at 5:30 AM!!! 5:30 AM friends...ugh. but we had a non-eventful trip and honestly it wasn't so bad. i'm weird so i had packed us ham and cheese sandwichs. we stopped several times to get out and walk. we stopped for gas somewhere a bit redneck and they sold mostly fireworks. lots and lots of fireworks. that place also had some kind of super duper blue light hand dryer. it was honestly a bit freaky. then we checked in and found we had a smoking room. it was quite smoky and so we asked for a change. no luck, but the nice lady offered to bring up an odor remover machine while we were at the conference. um....
