when i was growing up my dad had his own seed company. for some strange reason, my mom, and most times that meant me as well, would travel with him. she would patiently (i usually wasn't so patient) wait in the car while he had meetings. or she would sit in the car and call off seed varieties. or she would walk through the fields with him. i sure thought she was nuts!!
but yesterday, hubby mentioned he was going to a nearby town to do some "research" for one of his national register listings today. it is a district, which means several houses and buildings. he quietly asked if i wanted to go. i had a meeting set up and turned him down. this morning i got a call that the meeting needed to be pushed back until tomorrow. realizing that the list of things i had planned for today could be done quickly and then finished tomorrow i offered to go along with hubby. he smiled and said that would be great.
so we loaded up and headed out. we had to drive about an hour to get to this town. in the car we enjoyed uninterrupted conversation and even just the quiet of being together. when we parked and got out he handed me this tablet and maps and told me what i could do to help him. i kind of chuckled, but started in. as we walked i had the opportunity to stand back and watch him. he was amazing. i looked at these maps and had to really think. he knew exactly what he was doing and where he was. he was taking pictures and i just found it so insanely awesome to watch him work. he was in his element. we walked the district 3 times i think. each time doing something slightly differernt. then we headed to the local library for him to do some research. while there i headed to the computer lab and got a few bits of work done myself.
when we were all done we grabbed some lunch and headed back home. the whole way home i kep thinking, "this is why my mom sat in cornfields!" there was something so amazing watching him work today. and something even more amazing to be there with him and help him out. he didn't really need my help, but i think he liked having it. i think he enjoyed having someone to talk with and walk with.
he is so good at what he does....and after the past few years it was wonderful to see him enjoying his work. i love that i get to be his wife! i'm thankful for a mom who demonstrated what it means to be a help mate. i'm sure that she didn't really get all that excited about corn, soybeans, wheat, bugs, dirt...i mean it paid our bills, but really wasn't her thing. just like staring at old houses and buildings really isn't my thing. but it is his....and i would do almost anything to just be with him.
i feel blessed......
